Helar Laasik

Estonian Police and Border Guard Board

Helar Laasik is the Chief Expert at the Identity and Documentation Bureau of Estonian Police and Border Guard Board.

Having served as the Project Manager of the first e-Passport system in Estonia, Mr. Laasik has become an expert in e-Passports. He is currently working on the development and design process of the next generation of e-Passports as well as a new Estonian ID card.

After graduating from Tallinn Technical University with a degree in radio engineering, he joined the HiFi audio equipment R&D enterprise Punane RET. At Punane RET, he participated in the development of power amplifiers. He then joined the Estonian TV Broadcasting Centre as a senior engineer. After leaving Estonian TV, he was employed in Estonian Telephone Company as a market research specialist and later on as a development manager in the telecommunications services and infrastructure R&D department. He and his team were responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of Estonia's biggest Internet portal, "Hot.ee." After joining the Estonian Citizenship and Migration Board, which merged the Police, Border Guard Board and Citizenship and Migration Board in 2010, Mr. Laasik was responsible for managing various European Union related projects.
