National Power Industry War Conference

America is at grave risk of losing global leadership to China in a critical group of advanced, traded-sector industries that provide the foundation for economic strength and national security in the 21st century. ITIF calls them “national power industries.” China’s bid to dominate these industries is not a normal economic competition; it is a techno-economic-trade war, and how U.S. policymakers respond will determine whether America maintains the advanced production capabilities necessary to be a leading global power or instead declines into second-tier status while China rises to global hegemony.

In this special research series, made possible with generous support from the Smith Richardson Foundation, ITIF’s Hamilton Center on Industrial Strategy examines China’s predatory industrial strategies; assesses their impact on U.S. technological leadership; and provides a comprehensive policy agenda to bolster U.S. national power industries and avoid losing the techno-economic-trade war to China.

ITIF will publish new reports in this series throughout 2026 and will convene a policy conference in November to review its research findings and chart the path forward for policymakers. Register now and save the date. In the meantime, the latest reports in this series follow...

The Alarming Performance of US Advanced Technology Product Trade

Over the last decade, U.S. trade performance has deteriorated significantly in advanced industries.
