Commentary: The United States could pour an estimated $10.3 trillion into the infrastructure needed to support artificial intelligence between 2025 and 2032, including the rapid expansion of data centers. Economist Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh estimates that this spending would average roughly 3.6 percent of U.S. GDP annually, making the AI infrastructure build-out one of the largest concentrations of investment in a single industry in U.S. history.
The investment is already rippling through other parts of the economy. AI-related investment is expected to equal 1.9 percent of U.S. GDP in 2026, while expanding data-center construction is increasing demand for construction workers, electricians, land, equipment, and electricity. The AI boom is also creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, with LinkedIn estimating that AI contributed to more than 750,000 new U.S. jobs between 2023 and 2026, including 117,000 jobs at data centers since the start of 2024. If investment ultimately approaches the projected $10.3 trillion, the AI build-out would represent a historic reallocation of U.S. capital toward a technology expected to play an increasingly important role in productivity, innovation, and economic competitiveness.
