Fact of the Week: In Q1 2026, Five Unicorn Firms Accounted for 78 Percent of All Deal Value
Source: Franco Granda and Harrison Rolfes, “Q1 2026 Late-Stage Company Research Global Unicorn Tracker” (market industry report, Pitchbook, May 5, 2026).
Commentary: Unicorns are venture-backed firms valued at $1 billion or more. The term was originally coined to describe the rarity of firms reaching this high level of valuation, but today these firms are becoming increasingly common. In the first quarter of 2026, Pitchbook found there are 1,680 unicorns globally, valued at $8.6 trillion. However, although there are more unicorns than ever, the number and value of deals is becoming concentrated in just a few firms. Of the $8.6 trillion in unicorn value, 41.3 percent is concentrated in the top 10 firms by value. The number of venture capital deals involving unicorns is also growing, with $245.6 billion invested over 225 transactions in Q1 alone, but 78 percent of this value was raised by just 5 firms, including artificial intelligence (AI) firms OpenAI and Anthropic. In fact, AI accounted for nearly 50 percent of all unicorn value in Q1 2026, up from just 9.7 percent in 2016.
