ITIF Welcomes Congressional Action on Take It Down Act
WASHINGTON—Following House passage of the bipartisan TAKE IT DOWN Act, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the leading think tank for science and technology policy, released the following statement from ITIF Policy Analyst Alex Ambrose:
The TAKE IT DOWN Act is an important step forward that will help people pursue justice when they are victims of non-consensual intimate imagery, including deepfake images generated using AI. All Americans deserve protection from this type of abuse, and this law will make it a crime.
Unfortunately, it is easier than ever for malicious people to create explicit deepfakes that threaten someone’s reputation and safety. As the technology advances, it will become increasingly difficult to identify fake images. Congressional action was essential to address this problem.
The TAKE IT DOWN Act is particularly welcome because it will reduce the spread of both real and fake material that is sexually exploitative without infringing on anyone’s right to access other lawful content online.
