The Future of Work in Federal Government Requires Telework

For decades, the federal government has not kept pace with telework adoption compared to the private sector, resulting in real consequences in meeting the needs of a workforce that increasingly expects remote and hybrid options. Though not without its challenges, telework improves employee morale and aligns with worker preference, supports adaptability in service delivery, contributes to productivity, and helps recruit and retain critical talent. Additionally, digital transformation is one of the few issues with bipartisan consensus in the federal government, and teleworking is a critical piece of this transformation. At this pivotal moment, policymakers should look at the evidence and incorporate telework principles into ongoing IT modernization and digital transformation initiatives.
