October 24, 2022

Source: The Global Innovation Index 2022: What is the Future of Innovation-driven Growth? (Ithaca, Fontainebleau, and Geneva: Cornell University, INSEAD, and WIPO, 2022).

Commentary: China ranked 11th overall in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s 2022 Global Innovation Index. This up from its ranking of 34th overall in the 2012 edition of the index and is ahead of countries like Canada, France, and Japan. China is the biggest innovation overachiever per the index, measured as the difference between its realized score and its predicted score based on its gross domestic product per capita (adjusted for purchasing power parity). The index cites China’s strengths as its knowledge and technology outputs and its creative outputs, and its biggest weakness is its institutions.
