Atsushi Sunami

Atsushi Sunami is an Associate Professor and Director of Science and Technology Program at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, Japan. He is also an Deputy-director, China Research Center of Japan Science and Technology Agency and an Affiliated Professor at United Nations University. Also, he is a co-director of the Japan Research Center at Beijing University since 2006. From 2007, he is a council member ofthe Honda Foundation and the Okayama Institute for Quantum Physics among others.He is also serving in a number of the advisory committees on Science and Technology policy such as international cooperation, S&T system reforms, innovation in space and life science programs for Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Council of Science and Technology Policy, Cabinet Office. His research has concentrated on a comparative analysis of national innovation systems with particular focus on China and India, and an evolutionary approach in science and technology policy-making process. An Evolutionary Theory of Economic Change (written by Richard R. Nelson and Sidney G. Winter) translated by Akira Goto, Tatsuo Tanaka and him was published last October. He has just finished a book called “Intellectual Property Rights, Development, and Catch Up an International Comparative Study Edited by Hiroyuki Odagiri, Akira Goto, Atsushi Sunami, and Richard R. Nelson(Oxford Univ. Press, 2010) and has contributed a chapter called “Environmental Technology: Hong Kong’s Innovation System” in Innovation and the Limits of Laissez-faire: Hong Kong's Policy in Comparative Perspective, Doug Fuller, ed. (Palgrave, 2010).Professor Sunami received B.S.F.S. from Georgetown University in 1988. He obtained Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University in 2001. From 2001 to 2003, he was a Fellow at Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry established by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan. He also worked as a researcher in the Department of Policy Research at Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. from 1989 to 1991. He was a visiting researcher at Research Center for Advanced Economic Engineering, University of Tokyo, Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, and Tsinghua University, China.
