Commentary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial negative effect on student performance in the classroom, particularly in mathematics. Between 2019 and 2023, the average performance of U.S. eighth graders on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) exam exhibited a 27-point decline, while, in comparison, the average scores on the science portion of the exam did not show a statistically significant difference. Similarly, the scores of eighth graders on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), an exam administered to 37 nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), again demonstrated that American students performed worse in the math portion of the exam than the science section. The United States placed in the bottom half of OECD countries in mathematics, with 21 countries scoring higher on PISA; only 6 countries performed better than the United States in science.
