Fact of the Week: Construction Industry Facing a 439,000-Worker Shortage Driven by the Growth of Data Centers

Commentary: The growth of artificial intelligence has led to a boom in the data center construction industry, introducing thousands of well-paying jobs to the U.S. labor market. Data center construction jobs pay up to 30 percent more than typical construction jobs, and each project can employ thousands of workers. However, as of November 2025, the construction industry is facing a shortage of roughly 439,000 workers, most of which are skilled positions such as electricians and pipe layers. With over 400 data centers currently under development by tech companies such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, construction firms taking on data center projects are facing backlogs of close to a year. Despite the current shortage, the glut of data center construction jobs has encouraged more people to pursue skilled trades. In a local electricians' union serving D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, membership has doubled since 2018 to 14,700 members.
