Banning AI Superintelligence Would Be a Historic Mistake

December 4, 2025

As calls to ban the development of superintelligent AI grow louder, these proposals rest on speculation, not evidence. Prohibiting advanced AI would not make the United States safer—it would halt scientific progress, weaken economic and national security, and break with America’s tradition of protecting the freedom to think and innovate. Today’s AI systems are powerful tools, not autonomous threats, and they are already driving breakthroughs in medicine, materials science, and climate research.

As Daniel Castro writes in The Dispatch, risks should be addressed through strong oversight—such as incident monitoring and audits of high-risk systems—rather than by outlawing the advancement of knowledge itself. History shows that nations that restrict inquiry fall behind, while those that embrace new tools lead. The choice for the United States is clear: Guide innovation responsibly, but do not ban it.
