Fact of the Week: Forty Percent of Adults in Low- and Middle-Income Economies Formally Saved in 2024
Source: The World Bank, The Global Findex 2025, (Washington, DC: World Bank, 2025).
Commentary: Mobile money and digital banking services, enabled by the increase in mobile phone ownership and Internet connectivity, have made banking and saving possible for many individuals located in countries without access to secure financial institutions. Globally, the number of adults holding an account at a bank or similar financial institution has increased from 74 percent in 2021 to 79 percent today. In low- and middle-income regions, particularly Latin America and the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa, this growth is even more pronounced. Between 37 and 40 percent of individuals in these regions hold a mobile money account, an increase of over 50 percent since 2021. Access to these institutions has enabled more individuals to start formally saving money, with 40 percent of the population in low- and middle-income nations actively saving as of 2024, representing a 67 percent increase.
