Commentary: Nature Magazine’s Research Leaders index ranks the top global research institutions, including universities, government agencies, corporations, and non-profits. The organizations are ranked based on the total number of high-quality research articles they publish over the calendar year. In the academic category, Chinese universities claim 9 of the top 10 spots, with Harvard University ranked first overall. However, in the ranking of all research institutions, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a government-funded scientific think tank, surpassed Harvard for the first position. This reflects a rapid rise in Chinese research activity over the past decade. In 2020, just four Chinese universities made the top ten, and in 2016, only one did, Peking University.
