Commentary: The regularly administered National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) long-term trend (LTT), which assesses 13-year-old students’ reading and mathematical abilities, captured declines across the board. The test, which was last administered during the 2022-2023 school year, found that average reading scores for 13-year-old students declined 4 points from the previous assessment, with a decline taking place in every reported percentile. Mathematics scores decreased a full 9 points, the largest decline seen in half a century, with the lowest-performing students suffering the largest drops. Since the previous iteration measured the 2019-2020 school year, these newest results largely capture the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on educational outcomes.
