Big Business Is Not the Enemy of the People
In his new book, Goliath: The 100-Year War between Monopoly Power and Democracy, Matt Stoller of the Open Markets Institute presents a unified theory that the biggest problems facing our country today are caused by big businesses. To solve these problems, he calls for aggressive antitrust laws and regulations to whittle big companies down to size. However, in a book review for National Review, ITIF President Rob Atkinson writes that returning to a small-business economy of the 1800s is not likely to address the problem's America faces today. Increased choices, lower prices, and economies of scale shouldn't be dismissed in favor of a society of “individual yeomanry.”
