The True Damages of Online Piracy? It’s Hard to Measure

The academic literature surrounding the question of online piracy's impact on profits for content creators is still inconclusive despite many papers, writes Adams Nager in Innovation Files. However, this is not proof that digital theft of music and film is a “victimless crime.” Instead, research is inconclusive due to the substantial methodological difficulties incumbent in measuring the damages caused by online piracy.
