WASHINGTON (November 19, 2014) – The Internet of Things (IoT) represents the idea that ordinary objects—from thermostats and shoes to cars and lamp posts—will be embedded with sensors and connected to the Internet providing treasure troves of data for use by individuals, businesses and government. Many of these changes will be subtle and may go unnoticed by consumers, but the long-term effect could ultimately improve everything from health care delivery to government transparency to public safety. However, achieving this vision of a fully-connected world will not happen without the cooperation of policymakers.
ITIF’s Center for Data Innovation will host a half day conference on the future of smart devices, smart communities, and the smart policies that will enable the full implementation of the Internet of Things. The event will be held from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Thursday, December 4 at the Knight Studio at the Newseum (555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.) It will feature keynote addresses by Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Brian Schatz (D-HI).
“The Internet of Things has the potential to bring about a new wave of innovation over the next few years that will surpass what we have seen in the mobile space,” says Daniel Castro, Director of the Center for Data Innovation and organizer of the conference. “Policymakers need to understand the potential of the Internet of Things so that they can invest in these opportunities and create policies that support its deployment and adoption.”
The conference will feature panels on smart homes and devices; smart cities and smart industry development. Panelists will include representatives from the Federal Trade Commission, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, Toyota, Verizon and Nest Labs.
“Through this conference we hope to promote a vision for how the Internet of Things will improve society, and identify opportunities for the public sector and private sector to work together to build a ‘smart’ future,” Castro adds.
