Stephen Smith
Stephen F. Smith is a Research Professor in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where he is Director of the Intelligent Coordination and Logistics Laboratory. Dr. Smith’s research focuses broadly on the theory and practice of next-generation technologies for planning, scheduling and coordination. He pioneered the development and use of constraint-based search and optimization models for solving planning and scheduling problems, and continues to be an leader in their extension for effective use in complex, uncertain and distributed domains. He has directed the development of innovative planning and scheduling systems for a range of applications in transportation, manufacturing and logistics domains, including most recently the Surtrac adaptive traffic signal control system. Surtrac, which is designed specifically for real-time optimization of traffic flows in urban (grid) road networks, has demonstrated substantial improvement in both travel time efficiency and emissions reduction in its initial deployment in the East Liberty neighbourhood of Pittsburgh PA. Current work focuses on integration with connected vehicles and other emerging intelligent transportation system technologies.Dr. Smith has authored or co-authored over 250 technical articles in the areas of artificial intelligence, planning, scheduling and optimization. He is associate editor of the Journal of Scheduling and a member of the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, Constraints, and the International Journal of Planning and Scheduling. He served as a founding member of the executive council of the International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS). He currently serves as a Councilor for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and is a member of the executive council of the International Society of Interdisciplinary Scheduling (ISIS). He is an elected Fellow of the AAAI.Dr. Smith holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Westminster College, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
