# The China Chip Strategy That Is Backfiring on America

As Daniel Castro writes in [*Tech Policy Press*](https://www.techpolicy.press/the-china-chip-strategy-that-is-backfiring-on-america/), U.S. export controls were designed to preserve America’s lead in AI and semiconductors. But while the restrictions have created friction for China, they have also accelerated China’s push for technological self-sufficiency and strengthened competing AI ecosystems.

Rather than focusing solely on restricting access to chips, policymakers should evaluate whether current policies are advancing America’s long-term technological leadership. Sustaining that lead will require a strategy focused on innovation, investment, and expanding U.S. technological influence.
