Recommendation

Congress should create tax credits for SMEs and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to encourage investment in SME and supplier digitalization.

Details

The U.S. federal government provides very little assistance to help its SME base become more modern—Germany invests 6.2 times the amount the United States does on a per-GDP basis to help SMEs modernize, and Japan invests 54 times more. At the same time, SMEs often lack the capital to invest in replacing legacy equipment with smart manufacturing products. Creating tax credits for SMEs and OEMs will make the transition to digitalization in manufacturing more feasible for smaller firms and create significant returns in productivity.
