ITIF Welcomes Bill From Reps. Tonko and Bice Spurring Clean Hydrogen and Fuel Cell RD&D to Decarbonize Heavy Industry

December 9, 2022

WASHINGTON—Following the introduction of the Clean Hydrogen and Fuel Cell RD&D Act of 2022 by Reps. Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Stephanie Bice (R-OK), the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the leading think tank for science and technology policy, released the following statement from ITIF’s director of the Center for Clean Energy Innovation, Ed Rightor:

ITIF applauds Reps. Tonko and Bice for introducing the bipartisan Department of Energy (DOE) Clean Hydrogen and Fuel Cell RD&D Act of 2022.
Hydrogen can be a game-changer for decarbonizing multiple aspects of heavy industries, such as iron, steel, and chemical manufacturing, but only if it is clean, reliable, and affordable. Innovation will be crucial for lowering economic, technical, and business hurdles as well as implementation risks.
The proposed legislation would provide the needed RD&D support to address challenges to industrial adoption and enhance the viability and demonstrated applicability of low-carbon hydrogen solutions.
