ITIF Comments on USDA’s Latest Proposal to Revise and Update Regulations for Crops Improved Through Biotechnology Including Gene Editing
The USDA has 35 years of experience regulating crops improved through biotechnology “GMOs” confirming that they are as safe as or safer than those developed with older breeding methods. The latest proposal to update the regulations to incorporate the insights from this vast body of experience and also to cover products of newer techniques like gene editing has a number of positive features but still falls short. ITIF identifies strengths and weaknesses in the latest proposal and provides suggestions for remedying the remaining defects.
