Does Europe’s Competition Policy Work Against EU Firms Getting Needed Scale?

European digital startups cannot scale quickly enough to compete against fast-growing U.S. and Asian firms because of Europe’s fragmented markets. But the EU is also failing in the digital economy because its competition regulators use an antiquated view of competition. In an op-ed for CompLaw Blog, Eline Chivot outlines three main problems with the current EU view of competition and calls on Parliament and the Commission to work towards a new approach grounded not in the 20th century continental industrial economy but in the 21st century global innovation economy.
