ITIF Encourages FTC Task Force to Avoid Populist Furor, Maintain Objective Analysis

February 26, 2019

WASHINGTON—In response to the Federal Trade Commission’s creation of a task force aimed at monitoring competition in technology markets, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the world’s leading think tank for science and technology policy, released the following statement from its president, Rob Atkinson:

Given the increasing ‘techlash’, especially from the anti-monopoly left that sees large firms of any kind as suspect, it is not surprising that the FTC took this step. Hopefully the FTC will not be swayed by populist furor and instead confine itself to careful, objective analysis based on the reality that many technology markets tend toward concentration, and that this concentration is usually pro-consumer and pro-innovation. Moreover, ‘platform’ industries and industries with a free business model operate in unique ways, and applying traditional anti-trust analysis to them can lead to economically harmful outcomes.
