WASHINGTON—With populist fervor in many countries fueling skepticism and uncertainty in the global trade system, an international network of think tanks convened in Milan this week to explore creative solutions to the most pressing economic, trade, and innovation challenges facing the international community. Led by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the world’s top science and technology think tank, the Global Trade and Innovation Policy Alliance (GTIPA) today concluded its annual summit meeting, where GTIPA members and leading subject matter experts from around the world discussed topics such as the disruptive impact of emerging technologies; artificial intelligence; smart cities; 5G spectrum as a platform for digital innovation; and how ICT and biotechnology are converging in life-science innovation.
“Now more than ever, we need policy experts around the world to commit to the principles of market-driven trade and competition that have spurred growth and productivity across the global economy,” said Stephen Ezell, ITIF’s vice president for global innovation policy, who spearheads the GTIPA. “Countries around the world face strikingly similar questions to challenges such as privacy, trade, automation, and workforce development. Together we can find creative solutions that support innovation and worldwide prosperity.”
Since ITIF launched the GTIPA in 2016, the Alliance has doubled in size to include 25 members from across from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. GTIPA serves to highlight and cross-pollinate member organizations’ work on trade, globalization, and innovation policy, and to collaborate on events, research, reports, and efforts to develop policy on related topics. All GTIPA members sign a Statement of Shared Principles, with the goal of advancing a global agenda that encourages greater market- and rules-based global competition and trade liberalization, while at the same time championing a vital, constructive role for governments in accelerating growth and prosperity through greater innovation.
