How to Reform Labor Law for the Gig Economy: Adapt it, Fix it, or Suspend it

The number of people in alternative work arrangements has grown. These include the small but growing number of workers using Internet platforms. Because they are built around the historic distinction between an employee and an independent contractor, U.S. labor laws are increasingly out of date said Joe Kennedy in Morning Consult. Ideally, Congress would amend each law to reflect the increased diversity of the workforce. It could also create a third category of worker. Finally, Congress should give personal service platforms a temporary exemption from the labor laws so that companies can provide workers additional support without making them employees.
