ITIF Welcomes Agreement on Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act
WASHINGTON—The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) today welcomed inclusion of the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act as part of the trade customs conference report. ITIF released the following statement from Vice President Daniel Castro:
We commend the House and Senate for reaching an agreement to address this important measure, which will ensure the continued development and success of the Internet economy.
In 1998, Congress passed the original Internet Tax Freedom Act to create a moratorium on states imposing taxes on Internet access. Without the law, everyone would be paying more for Internet access today, and the digital economy would not be as large as it is today.
The cost, speed, and availability of broadband Internet access should continue to be a national priority, and by making this legislation permanent, we can boost the growth of the Internet and the economic and societal benefits that come with it.
Again, we praise the both the House and Senate for working to address this necessary legislation and hope to see the Internet Tax Freedom Act made permanent as soon as possible.
