Through the Department of Energy's (DOE) Center for Excellence program within the Solar Energy Technology Program, researchers at Georgia Tech spent years taking a silicon processing method called ion implantation, most commonly used in the IT industry, and using it to create cheap, high efficiency solar cells. Out of that research comes Suniva, which is expanding manufacturing operations in the United States and producing high efficiency solar cells competitively with foreign competitors.
