# Henry Kautz
**Division Director for Information & Intelligent Systems**

Henry Kautz is serving as [Division Director for Information & Intelligent Systems (IIS)](https://www.nsf.gov/div/index.jsp?div=IIS) at the National Science Foundation where he leads the [National AI Research Institutes](https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505686) program. He is a Professor in the [Department of Computer Science](http://www.cs.rochester.edu/) and was the founding director of the [Goergen Institute for Data Science](http://www.rochester.edu/rocdata/) at the [University of Rochester](http://www.rochester.edu/). He has been a researcher at AT&T Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ, and a full professor at the [University of Washington](https://www.cs.washington.edu/), Seattle. In 2010, he was elected President of the [Association for Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI)](http://www.aaai.org/), and in 2016 was elected Chair of the [American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Section on Information, Computing, and Communication](https://www.aaas.org/Section-T). His interdisciplinary research includes practical algorithms for solving worst-case intractable problems in logical and probabilistic reasoning; models for inferring human behavior from sensor data; pervasive healthcare applications of AI; and social media analytics. In 1989 he received the [IJCAI Computers & Thought Award](https://www.ijcai.org/awards), which recognizes outstanding young scientists in artificial intelligence, and 30 years later received the [2018 ACM-AAAI Allen Newell Award](https://awards.acm.org/newell/award-winners) for career contributions that have breadth within computer science and that bridge computer science and other disciplines. At the 2020 AAAI Conference, he received both the [Distinguished Service Award](https://aaai.org/Awards/distinguished.php) and the [Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Lecture Award](https://aaai.org/Awards/engelmore.php).
