Edward Markey

Ed Markey was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1946. He attended Boston College (B.A., 1968) and Boston College Law School (J.D., 1972). He was elected to the Massachusetts State House in 1972, where he served two terms representing Malden and Melrose. Markey was elected in 1976 to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served 18 terms, rising to become the Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, Ranking Democratic Member of the Natural Resources Committee, and the second ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. During his career in the House, Markey authored numerous pieces of significant legislation in a bipartisan manner. He has become a national leader on energy and environmental issues, working successfully to pass comprehensive climate legislation in the House, increase fuel economy standards and hold BP accountable after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. Senator Markey has strengthened homeland security in the areas of nuclear, air and maritime cargo, liquefied natural gas and chemical security. He is regarded as an expert in telecommunications and technology policy and has worked to ensure openness and competition, including breaking down monopolies in the cable television and telephone markets. He is married to Dr. Susan Blumenthal.
