Program Manager for Accessibility Technology, Training, and Research
The Carroll Center for the Blind
Brian Switzer serves as the Program Manager for Accessibility Technology, Training, and Research. In this capacity, Brian is responsible for strategizing and implementing curriculum initiatives within the SRUTT program and various Computer Department programs. Through adept instruction of technology tools, Brian enhances employability and fosters independence among participants with visual impairments. Moreover, Brian actively engages with research institutions as part of the Research program, facilitating collaborations between researchers and participants. These efforts aim to advance instructional and technological support for people who are living with blindness and visual impairment.
Prior to joining the Carroll Center, Brian Switzer served as the Training and Technology Manager at Perkins School for the Blind. During his time at Perkins, Brian worked with transition-aged youths and adults entering the workforce to ensure that they had the technology, pre-employment, and employment skills needed to be successful on the job. To this end, he contributed to the launch of several initiatives at Perkins. In addition to program development, Brian has experience in digital accessibility consulting for private, non-profit, and government agencies, including Strava, RunKeeper, and the Talking Information Center.
He was a high school math teacher earlier in his career. Switzer became interested in assistive technology after losing his own vision.
He holds a Master’s degree in Ethics and Public Policy from Suffolk University and a second Master’s in Education and Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist graduate certificate from UMass Boston.
Brian is an outspoken advocate for people with blindness, low vision, and deafblindness. He is the Chairperson for the Rehabilitation Council for the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, chairperson for the Advisory Council for DeafBlind Community Access Network, and sits on the Board of Directors for Deaf, Inc.
