Alfonso joined the Competition and EU Law Department of Garrigues in the Brussels office in 2007, after completing the Master in European Law in the College of Europe (Bruges). Prior to that, he had worked in the Madrid office as an intern. During the academic year 2009/2010 he followed a Master’s Program in Harvard University; after his graduation he came back to the Brussels office.

Alfonso advices clients in relation to infringement proceedings before the European Commission and the Spanish Competition Authority (the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia) (cartels, other agreements restricting competition and abuses of dominant position); the designing of commercial and distribution strategies, mergers control; and State aid proceedings before the competition authorities and the European and Spanish courts in various sectors.

Additionally, Alfonso has extensive expertise representing clients before the General Court and the Court of Justice of the EU in numerous cases. He also has vast experience in contentious-administrative proceedings before the Spanish courts.

He has been acknowledged as a Competition Law specialist in Spain by Chambers& Partners.

Alfonso is a Visiting Professor at the Brussels School of Competition, Brussels.

He is a co-director of the Course of Competition Law in the EU and in Spain, Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles, Madrid.

Alfonso has participated as conference speaker in numerous events organized, among others, by the Global Competition Law Centre (Brussels), the Academy of European Law (Brussels and Trier), theKOTRA –Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency- (Frankfurt), the Hungarian Olympic Committee (Budapest), the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies (Brussels), the Externado University (Bogotá), the Universidad San Pablo CEU (Madrid) and the Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (Madrid).

He has authored numerous publications in the main publications specialized in Competition Law in the EU and in Spain, and he has co-authored the book Manual de derecho de la competencia (Tecnos, 2008), a reference book for the Spanish Universities in the field of Competition Law.

Alfonso also co-edits the legal blog www.chillingcompetition.com.
