William Janeway is one of the world's leading "theorist-practitioners" in the fields of innovation and technology. An active venture capital investor, he built and led Warburg Pincus Technology Investment, which provided financial backing to a host of successful tech companies including BEA Systems and Veritas Software.

In addition, he has written extensively on the evolution of the innovation economy, including the need for new theories and government strategies to address the economic and societal transformations taking place. In his 2012 book, Doing Capitalism in the Innovation Economy: Markets, Speculation and the State, Janeway demolishes much of the anachronistic neoclassical economic thinking around innovation and presents a realistic view of how innovation happens, as well as the key role of government in spurring it.
